Learning how to apply binding to a quilt is an essential skill for any quilter. Quilt binding gives your project a neat, finished edge while protecting it from wear and fraying. Whether you’re working with ruffled bias binding or prepackaged double fold binding, mastering this step will make your quilts look professionally crafted.

There are two main types of purchased quilt binding: ruffled bias quilt binding (usually sold by the yard) and prepackaged double fold quilt binding (commonly sold in 3-yard packages). Both options are ideal for finishing quilts, blankets, throws, placemats, bibs, and more.

Applying Quilt Binding with a Ruffled Edge

Follow these steps to learn how to apply binding to a quilt using ruffled bias trim:

      • Prepare and Pin: Sandwich the edge of your quilt between the folded edges of the binding. Pin the binding in place, leaving about 1 inch of extra trim at the beginning and end. Remove stitches from the binding about 1 inch from each cut end.
      • Finish the Edge: Turn the edge of the ruffle back ¼ inch to create a rolled hem, encasing the raw edge. Stitch in place.
      • Fold and Press: Fold the bias tape header ½ inch, wrong sides together, and press. The ruffle should be slightly shorter than the header.
      • Pin and Sew: Finish pinning the binding along the quilt edge, then repeat for the other end.
      • Sew the Binding: Stitch around the entire quilt, sewing ¼ inch from the edge of the binding for a clean finish.

Applying Quilt Binding with Double-Fold Bias Tape

When learning how to apply binding to a quilt using prepackaged double-fold bias binding, you can use one of two methods:

      One-Step Method

      • With the narrow side of the binding facing up, fold it over the quilt edge and stitch as close to the edge as possible.
      • To bind a corner, sew to the edge of the fabric, remove the quilt from the sewing machine, and clip threads (do not cut the binding).
      • Fold the binding neatly around the corner, creating a mitered pleat. Pin in place.
      • Start sewing again at the corner, backtacking to secure.

      Two-Step Method

      • Unfold the binding and align the crease of the tape with the quilt’s seam line, right sides together. Ensure the narrow side of the tape is closest to the seam. Sew in the crease.
      • Turn the binding to the back side of the quilt, pin it in place, and stitch “in the ditch” along the seam for a seamless look.
      • For corners, cut the tape at the corner and start a new piece, leaving about ¾ inch of overlap. Fold and stitch as before, keeping corners smooth and even.

Mastering the Art of Applying Quilt Binding

Knowing how to apply binding to a quilt can transform your finished project from handmade to heirloom-quality. With a bit of practice, applying quilt binding becomes second nature—allowing you to finish every quilt beautifully and confidently.
